Energy for Life Art Contest
The Energy for Life Art Contest co-sponsored by E/The Environmental Magazine and Cape Wind invited students and young adults to submit art that illustrated their vision of the future as a result of wind power. Students were also asked to write a short essay describing their vision and their art.
Contest winners include one first place and nine “honorable mentions.” Please browse through our gallery to see the winning entries and read excerpts from the essays describing the artwork.
Congratulations to all the winners and students who entered the contest!

The most well known and beautiful aspect of Cape Cod is its beaches. Tourists come from all over to enjoy the salty waters and summers breeze. Growing up on the Cape I have appreciated the seagulls, crabs and soft sand as the tourists do and I would hope the Cape could stay this beautiful for the future. Through my artwork I have tried to display the appeal of the Cape-a healthy prosperous environment- with the help of wind powered energy. Without power plants assistance depleting the ozone layer and harmful pollution these wind farms would not only help our people, but our land as well.
I have created an environment where the sea creatures can live and the people can enjoy, as displayed by the footprint of an older generation. The baby represents more than just the prosperous youth, he symbolizes the wind farms as a whole. They are new and immature, but they are growing, and will have a positive effect on the entire Cape.
The small wind farms in the back of the painting shows that even though we would be able to see the tiny farms, we should be less concerned with the appearance in the distance and more concerned with the welfare of our people and habitat. This painting is a good depiction of the positive effects of wind powered energy and shows how little we would be giving up for a cleaner, healthier Cape Cod that tourists and residents alike can enjoy.

The message I want to convey in my artwork is that wind energy is free, renewable, and it doesn’t pollute the air. We know that wind is an energy source that will always be here. Also, people will be healthier and happier with a clean earth. I chose to show activities that you can do when you incorporate the wind. I used the color blue to show a clean sky and clean water. I chose the color green to show healthy plants. Objects in my design include a man sky diving to show that the wind does many things. When I look at my artwork it makes me ask, “Why can’t our earth look like that?”

Look into the future, what would you like to see? I would like to be using less fossil fuel and more wind energy. We should use clean air, less pollution and live with wind energy and have fun. I show my message in my artwork with bright colors to show clean energy, happy people having fun with wind energy and clean air.

My message in my artwork is that a little girl can play outside because it is not all polluted. There is also a nice clean sky. The sky is blue but sort of dark because the sun is going to set soon. When I look at my poster I feel joyful because it shows how people can have fun without filling their lungs with smog.

My vision of the future using wind power is that people will use wind power more and have less pollution. The vision in my artwork is that wind power is useful. I have included a wind turbine, boat, kite and hung clothes. The turbine represents cleaner energy. The kite represents playing in the wind and the clothes show a natural use of wind.

Wind can be used different in the future and now. Wind can be used for sailboats, windmills, wind wheels, and wind boards. These are the things I learned studying wind: 1) wind is always with us 2) wind is used for more than I thought 3) Solar and wind power can work together

Wind is free and clean. Wind turbines and sailboats don’t bring pollution…. I want people to know that wind power can be used in many different ways. At night I want people to shut their lights off. When people go to work walk, don’t drive a car. That’s a way to save energy. Make inventions that have to do with wind energy. Make a cleaner environment.

Get out there and use wind power to prove that this form of energy can make the sky blue, the water clean, and other rewards for us. Wind power is the key to stop polluting if you help by using it.

My vision of the future using wind power is that the pollution will not come to Cape Cod anymore and some factories of the factories in will be shut down and wind will be our new source of energy. The message in my artwork is to put a lot more wind turbines and this should improve our air, water, atmosphere and our ground.
