Cape Wind wins federal district court case
Wednesday, August 20, 2003
BOSTON, MA – Federal District Court Judge Joseph Tauro late yesterday rejected an appeal of Cape Wind opponents that had attempted to invalidate the permit for the Scientific Data Tower on Horseshoe Shoal.
Cape Wind President Jim Gordon observed that project opponents had been trying to block the gathering of scientific information in their lawsuit, “Cape Wind is working hard to provide as much objective scientific information about this project as possible, and attempts like this failed lawsuit of our opponents represent an effort to stifle scientific research and informed debate on the merits of this important project.”
Gordon went on to say that, “the Scientific Data Tower is also providing the public with important real-time information on the environmental conditions of Nantucket Sound, this information is benefiting recreational boaters, commercial fishermen and mariners and scientific and educational institutions.
Cape Wind is currently undergoing an extensive environmental permit public-interest review by seventeen federal and state agencies.
Cape Wind’s proposal to build America’s first offshore wind farm on Horseshoe Shoal would provide three-quarters of the electricity used on Cape Cod and the Islands from clean, renewable energy - reducing this region’s need to import oil, coal and gas. Cape Wind will create new jobs, lower electric costs, contribute to a healthier environment, increase energy independence and establish Massachusetts as a leader in offshore wind power.
